For small business owners, or independant individuals creating a new website, you must buy a domain if you want to protect the name, and not allow other individuals from using the same name in their site. If you want to “patent,” your site, you must buy a domain space, in order to ensure you are the only person who can use that name for your business site. When you buy a domain space this is pretty much telling other consumers, or individuals interested in creating a website that the name is already in use by your company.

Companies who buy a domain are typically larger companies who have a certain product name or business name which might be common. For example, Smith industrials might want to buy a domain in order to ensure they are the only Smith industrials out there. Since Smith is a common name, if you buy a domain you will be ensuring yourself that you are the only company with this name, and will put a warning to any other people looking to use the same domain as your url, that the name is already taken by your company.

Creating a website can really increase the amount of business and revenue which your company makes, therefore, to ensure you are the only company (or individual), with the website name you want to use, you must buy a domain space to ensure no other company can use the name. Not only is this a legal matter, but it will also ensure you that your company is getting your name out there to consumers, and that other similar businesses don’t have the same name, and offer the same services, in turn, being in direct competition with your company. When creating your site, buying a domain will ensure you can use the name you want, and will ensure you are the only company using it.
